July Events at Jacksonville Cemetery
Jacquie Beveridge shares the following information:
Tuesday Evening Cemetery Stroll on July 9, starting at 6:30 p.m. will focus on Cemetery Symbolism, Art Form with a Meaning. Learn what all these various symbols that appear on the headstones and monuments mean and what messages are being passed on to us.
History Saturday in the Cemetery program on July 13 at 10:00 a.m. will be about the Veterans of the Civil War and include Poetry from the Era. The program will take a look back at Civil War and why it mattered and some of the aftermath of that terrible war. They will also talk about the impact the war had on Southern Oregon. Poetry and a letter home from a Civil War soldier will be a part of the program.
Both of these programs/tours are free and no advance reservations are required. They suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
Donations to support the work of the Friends of Jacksonville’s Historic Cemetery are always appreciated. Parking available at the top of the Cemetery Road.
On Saturday, July 20 at 9:00 a.m. is Marker Cleaning Workshop and is open to anyone interested in learning how to properly and safely clean headstones and monuments. All supplies and tools provided for the workshop. Dress for the project as you will get a little wet. They suggest comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen and perhaps a stool to site on while working. Meet at the top of the Cemetery Road by the buildings located inside the traffic circle.
