May 15 Meeting – Purple Heart Presentation

This month’s program features a presentation by SGS members Merilee Mulvey and Mary Gill on the history and notable recipients of the Purple Heart medal.  The medal is awarded to “members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action.  It is specifically a combat decoration.”  Mary Gill will share a story of her ancestor recipient and his genealogical background.

Also on the topic of Facebook – The New Facebook Genealogy Squad
“The group will focus on answering questions and solving problems, while demonstrating best practices with all aspects of genealogical research.” Administrators include genealogy notables such as Blaine Bettinger, Cyndi Ingle (Cindy’s List) and Drew Smith (host of Genealogy Connection podcast).  Read more about the Squad HERE.  Once at the site, click ‘Request to Join’. You will be prompted with 2 questions regarding your genealogy interest.  An administrator will respond.

During a prior SGS program, Jacquie Beveridge did a presentation on the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and their endeavors to record information of interest to genealogist.  As an update, she indicates “thanks to a generous gift from Colorado Daughters, the DAR Library has embarked on an effort to identify and digitize genealogically relevant reports produced by the WPA in the 1930s and 40s to be added to the Library’s digital resources”.  Navigate to the DAR Library site HERE.
