April 20th SGS Meeting
A trio of activities are planned for the SGS monthly meeting:

  • ‘A Genealogical Adventure’ – A presentation by Merilee Mulvey on Researching a Canadian Expeditionary Force WWI medal and tracking down the owner’s family.
  • Sandy Zinn from the Pioneer Museum will give a short talk about the museum.
  • Also planned is a short tour of the Siuslaw Room.  First, to remind members what we have there, and second, a photo opportunity for Mark Brennan to photograph people using the room for possible future grant requests.

The Smith Project
Several SGS researchers have been researching the family history for local residents, Dick and Harriet Smith.  Upon their direction, the project began with research of Harriet’s maternal family members, whom she had little knowledge of.  Using both Family Tree Maker and Ancestry’s Family Tree, the research group has been working collaboratively on the project. After the first week, they were able to establish a six generation family tree.  Harriet (at 93 years old) looked over a print out of the tree and was excited to view the names of “so many family members for the first time”.  The project continues as the Smiths await their Ancestry DNA test results.  In appreciation of the researchers efforts, the Smiths have made a generous donation to SGS.

From the Library Researchers
Pat Rongey reports 7 people stopped in at the Siuslaw Room on Tuesday afternoon to do genealogy research. Two people ordered DNA test kits using the SGS discount code. Another person received her DNA results and as an adoptee, has begun researching her birth family.

Mike Allen also reports 3 visitors last Friday for genealogy research.
